Directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Dinesh Vijan, Stree (2018) is one of the best examples of how Bollywood can intelligently blend horror, comedy, and social commentary without watering down any of the three. The movie is located in a fictitious small town of Chanderi, where fear is big after the myth of the spirit who kidnaps men during the night called Stree starts to plague the life of the town. It is the tale of Vicky (performed by Rajkummar Rao) and his friends, who at first take the entire situation as a joke but are soon compelled to face their most basic fears as the supernatural events start to become more and more tangible. The role of the titular Stree played by Shraddha Kapoor gives the character an unusual combination of mystery, vulnerability and empathy, which makes her more than a mere ghost. This folklore is not only used in the film to develop tension and horror, but also as a prism through which the film explores issues such as blind faith, patriarchy, and the way communities react to fear.
The real difference that Stree has is its grounded approach. The movie does not depend on the typical elements of horror but instead on atmosphere, witty dialogue, and the strange nature of the characters to create suspense. The sincerity and comic timing of Rajkummar Rao make Vicky seem to be a real person who is not carefree but a responsible member of the community. The rest of the cast, such as Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, and Abhishek Banerjee, is humorous, which is natural and relatable, not imposed. The screenplay is acute and humorous, filled with some of the best one-liners and scenes that do not dispel the sense of eerie but do not take away the tension. Cinematography and sound design contribute to the haunting atmosphere, and the background music makes the viewers feel tense in a subtle manner, instead of jump scares.
In addition to the entertainment, Stree is an ingenious way of discussing the manipulation of fear and the way in which the society tends to disregard the voices of women until it is too late. It emphasizes the way in which societies descend into helplessness, gossip, and superstition in the presence of an unknown menace and the way in which empathy, bravery, and action are the keys to overcoming these disasters. This twist is emotionally touching and supports the thought that fear and violence can be stopped by knowledge and compassion.
Altogether, Stree is an amazingly made movie that is entertaining and makes people think critically about how fear and tradition influence the behavior. It is an ideal watch to the person that loves horror with a sense of humor, complex characters and a deep message behind a good story. High acting, a smart script, and a chilling and yet touching mood make Stree a film worth watching, enjoyable and thought-provoking.
